How to Relieve Constipation with Yoga

Yoga is one of the best all around physical workouts you can do and it can teach you a lot about your body and how to relieve constipation. A yoga practice gives you an opportunity to connect with your body through your breath but also cleanse your organs through movement.

How to Relieve Constipation with Sun Salutations

Sun Salutations are a great way to get your body moving in the morning and gently stretch your muscles. Starting the day with asanas (physical postures) and deep breathing will also stimulate your digestive system and provide constipation relief. Here are the steps for a Sun Salutation:

  1. Stand rooted through your heels and pull your belly tight.
  2. Inhale your arms overhead and exhale while folding your body forward.
  3. Inhale while stepping your right leg back, exhale your left leg to meet the back in plank (straight arm push-up position).
  4. Inhale here, then descend slowly to the ground.
  5. Inhale into a gentle heart opener (cobra pose), then exhale back to downward facing dog.
  6. Inhale your right leg between your hands, exhale your left to meet the right.
  7. Inhale your hands up, and exhale them to the center of your chest in prayer position.

Repeat this on the other side and continue with this exercise for about 10 minutes to warm your body up and to get your digestive tract moving. This is how to relieve constipation through simple body movements that also gently stimulate and massage your organs.

How to Relieve Constipation with Gentle Twists

Twists are known to be rejuvenating and cleansing for the organs. As we twist, our organs are compressed and release toxins that were stuck in the tissue. When we release the twist, new oxygenated blood is welcomed into the organs and cleans them out. This stimulates circulation to the major organs including the colon, improving digestion and acting as a constipation treatment. Here are some simple twists to include after you have warmed up with Sun Salutations:

  1. Lay down on your yoga mat and close your eyes and focus on your breath.
  2. Extend your arms in a T configuration.
  3. Prop yourself up on your right hip/side and hook your left leg to the inside of your right knee.
  4. To complete the twist, look to your left.

You can use your right arm to keep your left knee in place, but don’t force the twist. You can stay in this twist for a couple of minutes and then switch sides.

If you include the above into your daily morning routine, your body will feel great and your mind will be focused. Yoga has many variations and suggestions on how to relieve constipation through natural means. Sun salutations and twists will be sure to get your heart rate moving, digestion stimulated, and help with your constipation relief.
